If I hit the target someday, shooting arrows through a bamboo pole, that’s about all the good luck I can hope for” (908). To me, all ‘good luck’ means is squeezing a little money from the change when I am sent to by persimmon juice. He was a low and hot-tempered boy with the fragile figure, which made other people laugh at him. The story is concentrated on his life and thoughts, but the author depicted him as an usual boy. Kichizo is a sixteen years-old orphan, who repaired umbrellas in an umbrella shop. She sewed clothes and liked people, who were not afraid “to speak their minds” (910). She had no unusual attributes or outstanding traits, as she was an ordinary stylish woman in early twenties, kind and friendly, and in an old kimono. According to the author, “With her quick wit, she was soon friendly with everyone” (910). Okyo is a seamstress, who lives near the umbrella factory and sews clothes for the members of the shop. Both of them have no relatives, who could support them.

In order to prove this suggestion, it is worth analyzing the characters. The story is one of realism because it demonstrates the lives of the representatives of the middle class. The story is written in the realistic style that will be proven further. The readers do not think about the author’s opinion, as the story is focused completely on the characters. The short story “Separate Ways” by Higuchi Ichiyo represents the destinies of two different people, whose lives may hardly be called happy. Nowadays, when people are involved in technology and science development, some of them remain abounded from these processes.
